Theatre REVIEW: The Rainbow - ★★★

Writer's picture: Mix Up Theatre (Stewart)Mix Up Theatre (Stewart)

This bold reimagining gives voice to the 3 Polish women at the heart of D.H. Lawrence’s classic novel.

Lydia, a political activist and refugee from Poland, has been forced to carve out a new life for herself and her daughter in rural Nottinghamshire. But at what emotional cost?

Anna, her daughter, has been birthing and raising children for decades. As the menopause hits, she starts to question what it is that she really wants.

Ursula, Anna's daughter, has no interest in marriage. She wants to work, to explore her sexuality and to find out what it means to be Polish.

Told through interweaving lyrical narration, compelling dialogue, music and movement, this high energy ensemble piece paints a colourful picture of female emancipation, class struggle, gender and migrant identity; reminding us that it is only when we embrace the past that we discover who we really are.

Stewart - ★★★

"A visceral, elegant production that is elevated by the performances of the ensemble, particular kudos to the female cast.

Admittedly I am not familiar with the text that the production is an adaptation of so can't give too much insight into this side of things however, the epic scale, various timelines, musical numbers all add up to a show that is almost engulfed by its own scope - it's a long show, and it feels the weight of that. Not to say that an epic timeline isn't deserving but for me the story did become a little repetitive and perhaps some cutting would have benefitted the show.

The production does sparkle when a hint of a queer subplot enters the frame, but it doesn't stay around for too long, but is definitely the highlight of the performance in both the music, song and performances at this point - Laura Andressen Guimaraes has a tendency to steal every scene she appears in as a number of supporting characters.

So it's perhaps the material itself that weighs the production down because the cast are all fantastic, it is inherently quite a beautiful show so for many it will definitely warrant that extra star or two - so give it a try as its always worth supporting productions that are pushing boundaries and expectations. A very commendable performance all round."
