Dates: Until 22nd February 2022
Synopsis
Film special effects superstar Ray Harryhausen elevated stop motion animation to an art. His innovative and inspiring filming, from the 1950s onwards, changed the face of modern movie making forever. For the first time, highlights from Ray’s collection will be showcased, which will be the largest and widest-ranging exhibition of his work ever seen, with newly restored and previously unseen material from his incredible archive.
Ray Harryhausen's work included the films Jason and the Argonauts, the Sinbad films of the 1950s and 1970s, One Million Years B.C. and Mighty Joe Young, and a wider portfolio including children’s fairy tales and commercials. He also inspired a generation of filmmakers such as Peter Jackson, Aardman Animation, Tim Burton, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg, and his influence on blockbuster cinema can be felt to this day.
This exhibition is in collaboration with the Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday year. As part of a series of events and initiatives under the banner #Harryhausen100, this exhibition will be accompanied by screenings, workshops and more, bringing his creations to life once more and celebrating the legacy of a filmmaker who changed the face of modern cinema.

"I liked fighting the god of war in the video. I also liked seeing how the little models were used in film. The posters were pretty cool too."

"This is a wonderful exhibition, packed full of details that any geek of cinema will soak up and bask in! From the opening tribute to King Kong - Harryhausen's inspiration - through a thoroughly detailed look through Harryhausen's career and finishing with the opportunity to appear alongside his monsters on green screen!
There's models in here that will bring back a lot of people's childhood memories, the films were never brilliant but the artistry of Harryhausen's work was never in doubt and has inspired almost every fantasy filmmaking director of modern day.
Feel inspired and go see this exhibition if you love movies, fantasy or animation.
If you can't make it to Edinburgh the gallery also offers an online exhibition which is equally as fantastic and also a welcome addition even if you do make it along to the gallery as the documentaries are fantastic. A brilliant experience!"

"What an amazing exhibition!
Seeing the stop motion Puppets in person and how they have survived this whole time is a triumph!
These little guys have became 'BIG' stars in their own right.
Getting to see the process of Ray's humble beginnings making short movies at his parents home all the way to creating influential characters on to the big screen is just inspirational.
Please go see the Ray HarryHausen exhibition! "
