FRINGE REVIEW: Round-Up 2!

Here's a quick run-down of everything else we've caught at the festival so far...

ARI: The Spirit of Korea

Dance, Physical Theatre and Circus (Musical Theatre, Traditional)

Age 5+

13:30 - Assembly Hall - until 25th

★★★★

"A show fully committed to spiriting the audience off to another time and place with a brilliant committed cast, wonderful costumes and fantastic singing, dancing and choreography. And those drums! Wow! Story is a little melodramatic but ties in with the traditional tale. A visual feast."

Buffy Revamped

Comedy (Satire, Sci-Fi)

Age 14+

run ended

Struan (Age 16):

★★★★★

"Buffy revamped sees the 7 seasons of the show Buffy the vampire slayer explained by fan favourite character Spike in 70 mins. Perfect for any fan of the show and friends they may drag along. Chock full of 90s references, Brendan Murphy kills it in this hilarious and impressive one man show."

Dead Mom Play

Theatre (Dark Comedy, New Writing)

Age 18+

run ended

★★★

"An energetic (sometimes a little too over energetic!) dark comedy about a young man coming to terms with the impending death of his mother. He's attempting to write a script about the experience and gets lots of input from his mother (fantastic performance by Liv Hodder) and Death himself. Has lots of great moments here if doesn't always quite gel together. An odd choice for 9:40am in the morning but definitely an interesting and fully committed one."

I Am Your Tribute

Cabaret and Variety (Interactive, Comedy)

Age 18+

12:05 - PBH's Free Fringe @ Voodoo Rooms - Ballroom

★★★★★

"A brilliant hour with the lovely host Sarah Louise-Young who highlights her love for popular songs and how she became a tribute act. It's such a fun, friendly start to a day at the fringe and she has a lot of fun with the audience along the way - you can join in as much or as little as you like. This is one of my favourite shows of the festival this year (been to see it twice) and been up on the stage with Sarah myself performing as David Bowie. Ha. Fabulous."

Mark Simmons - More Jokes

Comedy (Stand-Up)

Age 16+

13:45 - PBH's Free Fringe @ Liquid Room Annexe / Warehouse

★★★

"If you are coming to Simmons' show afresh this year then you are likely to add an extra star or two. His deadpan delivery of quick fire wordplay and shall we say, Dad jokes, is downright hilarious. There's plenty of laughs. But if like me, your a big fan and see him every year, it seems the title might be worth chaning to More (of the same) Jokes - there's not an awful lot of new material here. On another note even Simmons' winning joke of the year (by Dave) is an old joke. Still it's a packed house again for Simmons so go see him if you haven't (especially whilst it's still part of the free fringe)."

Dance N'Speak Easy

Dance, Physical Theatre and Circus (Hip-Hop, Family-Friendly)

Age 5+

15:25 - Underbelly Bristo Square - McEwan Hall

★★★★

"Contender for the coolest show at the festival this year, the brilliant Wanted Posse make their Fringe debut with this stylish hip-hop meets 1920's style show. The cast have their own style and talent but they come together well as a team. It starts to run out of steam a little along the way but this is definitely something, fresh fun and like I said, just effortlessly cool. Loved it and can't wait to see what's up next from Wanted Posse."

Olivia Levine: Unstuck

Comedy (LGBTQ+, Solo Show)

Age 16+

19:30 - Just the Tonic at the Mash House - Just the Bottle Room

★★

"This feels more like a therapy session than a stand-up comedy routine. Olivia has a frantic energy as she recites tales of her childhood and growing up that are odd, awkward and severely lacking in a punchline. It's picked up a lot of praise elsewhere so maybe we're missing the point here - there was a few fair laughs in the room - but also a few walk-outs. Perhaps title should be undercooked."

Elf Lyons: Horses

Comedy (Clown, Physical Theatre)

Age 12+

21:20 - Pleasance Courtyard - Above

★★★★

"One of the highest rated shows at the festival this year - check out all those reviews on the posters! This is certainly one of the more out there comedy shows. Elf Lyons performs a stand-up tale entirely as a horse! In terms of the mime and physical comedy aspect of the performance it's incredible! Lyons somehow manages to empeccably create this horse character on the stage and the show is a number of comedy monologues and sketches - all with an equine theme. There's a thin line occasionally crossed between funny and clever but I did love the Medusa sketch and the final moments where audiences are invited on stage was fabulous. It's something else! Go see it!"

The Greatest Magic Show

Children's Shows (Magic, Comedy)

Age 4-12

13:10 - Assembly George Square Gardens - Palais du Variete

★★★★★

"Fantastic family show - chock-full of laughs and tricks. The hosts are a lot of fun and get the audience going right from the off. There's enough laughs in their for the parents and the interaction with the children is well handled. A great hour to entertain the little one's."

Shotgunned

Theatre (Comedy, Drama)

Age 14+

19:30 - theSpace @ Surgeon's Hall - Haldane Theatre

★★★★★

"An engrossing piece of theatre that details the highs and lows of a young couple. The pitch perfect script delves into a series of moments in a non-chronological order which must be quite a challenge for the two actors but the performances from both Fraser Allan Hogg and Lorna Panton could likely be contender for the finest piece of acting you'll see at the festival this year. With tragedy amongst the comedy this is a sensitively handled piece of theatre that has clearly been a labour of love, a lot of hard work from all involved has created quite frankly, a masterpiece."
