The dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is in possession of a mysterious and magical ring.

The sequel to 2012's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, it is the second instalment in The Hobbit trilogy, acting as a prequel to Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The film received mostly positive reviews.

Another massive fantasy franchise is the Harry Potter films including their own dragon in the final film - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Some of the stars of the movie appear in the Marvel movies, all of whom appear in Avengers: Endgame. For more J.R.R. Tolkien adventures check out the other Hobbit films (An Unexpected Journey and The Battle of the Five Armies) and The Lord of the Rings trilogy from Peter Jackson. There's another dragon in family friendly adventure Shrek. Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch teamed up previously in Sherlock.
