Film REVIEW: Jurassic World: Dominion - ★★★★

Updated: Apr 23, 2023

With old faces, new heroes and a hungrier-than-ever lineup of dinos, Jurassic World Dominion is the most anticipated chomp romp since Spielberg’s original.

Director: Colin Trevorrow

Writer: Emily Carmichael, Colin Trevorrow based on characters by Michael Crichton

Stars: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldbum, Sam Neill, DeWanda Wise.

Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Themes: Dinosaur, Jurassic Park, Sequel

Four years after the destruction of Isla Nublar, dinosaurs now live--and hunt--alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history's most fearsome creatures in a new Era.

It is the sequel to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), the sixth installment in the Jurassic Park franchise, the final film in the Jurassic World trilogy, and the conclusion to the storyline started in the original Jurassic Park trilogy.

It received generally negative reviews from critics, who felt that the franchise had run its course.

Daniel (Age 12) - ★★★★1/2

"Jurrasic World Dominion was a good movie.

It had good action and it was cool seeing the characters from Jurrasic park meet the Jurrasic World characters.

My favourite characters were Owen and Allan Grant. The action in this film was great and the CGI was incredible.

Overall it was a great movie"

What's the backstory to Jurassic World: Dominion?

Unless you’ve been fossilised in amber since 1993’s original Jurassic Park, you’ll know how these movies roll. Misguided scientists. Genetically engineered dinosaurs. Catastrophic system failure. Screaming. Running.

There’s no such thing as a bad Jurassic movie. But since the saga was rebranded/booted with 2015’s Jurassic World – starring Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy series, Avengers: Infinity War / Endgame) as velociraptor handler Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard (Spider-Man 3) as theme park manager Claire Dearing – it’s been running on full mojo.

Now, Jurassic World Dominion does what no previous instalment has, by uniting the two generations of franchise heroes and throwing them into the year’s toothiest chomp romp.

“This is a very different kind of Jurassic movie,” director Colin Trevorrow (The Book of Henry) tells Empire.

“There's a lot of action and adventure. But the way we bring these characters together and the effect they have on each other and how their stories collide is just very exciting for me.”

What's the Jurassic World Dominion plot?

Almost 30 years ago, in the original Jurassic Park, rock ‘n’ roll chaos theorist Dr Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldbum - Thor: Ragnarok) warned that cloning dinosaurs would end in disaster. We should have listened. Picking up the thread from 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the super-lizards are now roaming the human world and showing not a hint of domestication.

Raptor packs prowl the forests. T-Rexes run amok at drive-in cinemas. The monstrous aquatic Mosasaurus drags a fishing trawler into the depths.

“Humans and dinosaurs can’t co-exist,” says Dearing. “We created an ecological disaster.” Or, as Goldblum’s returning mathematician puts it: “We’re racing towards the extinction of our species. We not only lack dominion over nature. We’re subordinate to it.”

But Jurassic World Dominion isn’t as simple as open warfare. Former raptor wrangler Owen Grady is trying to protect his scaly pets. “If they find her, we’re never gonna see her again,” he says of semi-tame Blue. “We gotta protect her, that’s our job.”

How does Jurassic World Dominion fit into the franchise?

The first three Jurassic Park movies were episodic adventures. But the Jurassic World trilogy has more of an overarching story, and Colin Trevorrow says this third instalment will answer many of our burning questions.

“This is the movie that I've been waiting to make from the beginning,” he revealed at a round-table event for ComicBook.com. "It's the one that we have spent the past two movies building to. It really was part of a larger story and part of the design.”

Meanwhile, as he slips back into his classic role as Dr Alan Grant, Sam Neill told Variety that Jurassic Park Dominion returns the saga to the tone of the original. “It’s going to be a big film. Colin Trevorrow has that childlike sense of wonder, playfulness and inventiveness that Steven Spielberg has.”

What are the biggest moments in the Jurassic World Dominion trailer?

"I think when you see the trailer for this movie, your reaction will be, 'Oh man, he's really going for it,'” Trevorrow told Empire. “And I really am. I am shamelessly going for it with this movie.”

No kidding. The Jurassic World Dominion trailer features some of the saga’s best set pieces. Try the sequence at 1:59 when Grady tears through a city on a dirt bike, raptors snapping at his heels. Or the moment at 2:08 when a giant Quetzalcoatlus stabs the heroes’ plane engines. And how about the hugely creepy scene at 1:55, when a flock of unidentified airborne dinos erupts from a disused barn like a cloud of horseflies?

But Jurassic movies have always been about tension as much as action, and the scene in which a helpless Dearing hides underwater, mere inches from a Therizinosaurus’s hungry maw, might just top the iconic ‘raptors in the kitchen’ sequence from Spielberg’s original film.

Tell us about the new dinosaurs in the Jurassic World Dominion trailer?

You can take the T-Rex and raptors as read. It’s a cautious welcome back, too, for the frill-necked, venom-spitting Dilophosaurus that ate Dennis Nedry alive back in the first Jurassic Park.

But for Jurassic World Dominion, Trevorrow has dug deeper into his palaeontology handbook. You’ll see fewer test-tube dinos like the Indominus Rex and Indoraptor, and more real-life creatures like the Pyroraptor (imagine a snappier Velociraptor with feathers).

Meanwhile, Goldblum let slip in an interview with Insider that there are still surprises to come. “The three of us were in a tiny little space,” said the actor, “and we were being menaced by – I can't even tell you – a surprising faction of prehistoric creatures that you've never seen before.”

Check out the Jurassic World Dominion Prologue for a taste of what’s in store – and the jaw-dropping special effects.

Who are the classic characters in the new Jurassic Park movie?

In the early movies, Sam Neill’s Alan Grant had serious chemistry with Laura Dern’s (Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi) Dr. Ellie Sattler, and you only have to watch the Jurassic World Dominion trailer to see there’s still a spark.

Same character, but different world, different times,Neill told Variety. “Dr. Grant and Dr. Sattler haven’t seen each other for some time, so you’ll see how that pans out.”

How about the new Jurassic World Dominion cast?

We’ve lapped up the tetchy romance between Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard since 2015’s Jurassic World. But this latest adventure brings in some new blood, including She’s Gotta Have It and Fatherhood star DeWanda Wise, who plays sparky Air Force pilot Kayla Watts – and faces off against the Pyroraptor in the Jurassic World Dominion trailer.

Pratt has told us to expect great things from her. “Cannot wait to share the silver screen with the great and powerful @dewandawise,” tweeted the actor, “as she makes an entrance you will never forget.”

Sam Neill told The Hollywood Reporter, this is a movie where the viewing experience has to measure up to the monsters.

“It’s a very ambitious, huge story, a lot of characters, a lot of dinosaurs. It’s something that needs to be seen on a very big screen.”
