Film REVIEW: Gremlins (1984) - ★★★★

Director: Joe Dante

Writer: Chris Columbus

Stars: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday, Frances Lee McCain.

Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Horror

Themes: 1980s, Christmas, Monster

A young man inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town.

The film was a critical and commercial success. However, it was heavily criticized for some of its more violent sequences. It was followed by a sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, in 1990, which has a more satirical tone and parodies Hollywood sequels, to generally positive reviews from critics, but was a box-office bomb.

Matthew (Age 14) - ★★★★1/2

"Gremlins is an imaginative, chaotic and darkly funny story, with an incredible story and

fascinating creatures. That being said certain elements of the film seen irrelevant to the

overall plot, and seem rather unnecessary, such as the reason Kate hates Christmas is

because her father died on Christmas."
