This week's big cinema release...

Directed by: Tim Burton

Starring: Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara

Before he was Batman, Michael Keaton’s breakout role came in 1988 as the obnoxious ‘bio-exorcist’ hired by the recently deceased to scare away the humans moving into their homes. Now, a mere 36 years later, the Tim Burton saga we assumed was dead and buried is going bump in the night all over again, with Keaton fronting an ensemble cast that includes original stars (Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara) and the cream of the new scream team, led by Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega. Say his name three times – then hold on to your popcorn bucket.

Stewart - ★★★★★

"Beetlejuice is the greatest film of all time. No doubt in my mind. I watched it endlessly as a kid and still love it to this day. The cartoon style, macabre humour, excellent performances - Michael Keaton on showstopping form, Catherine O'Hara OTT camp diva and an amazing score by Danny Elfman (which by the way I use in nearly every Mix Up Theatre show!).

So along comes the sequel! 36 years later! I'm always worried that a sequel like this might feel pointless but this embraces the spirit of the original with Keaton, O'Hara and of course the mighty Winona Ryder returning to their roles and knocking it out the park once again!

The humour is as daft and wacky as ever, special effects, make-up all on point and of course that score is brilliant once again. Jenna Ortega is a welcome addition to the family.

If there's any criticism is that it overpacks the story a bit too much and it works best when focusing on Beetlejuice and the Deetz's rather than all the new characters but the world building of the underworld is a lot of fun. Loved it!"

UK TOP 10 BOX OFFICE: 2nd September

1. DESPICABLE ME 4

Directed by: Patrick Delage, Chris Renaud

Starring: Steve Carrell, Kristen Wiig, Will Ferrell

Illumination’s Despicable Me saga is officially unstoppable – 2017’s third film grossed a cool billion – and while details are thin on the ground, it’s confirmed that Steve Carrell and Kristen Wiig will return to front the fourth movie as reformed supervillain Gru and his sparky wife Lucy. But will dastardly twin brother Dru be the big bad, as implied at the end of 3? Carell isn’t saying. “It's a continuation of the story,” he told Digital Spy. “Gru and Lucy are married, they're a family at this point. It's the next step in their world with the Anti-Villain League and how their kids are included in the whole process.”

7. BLINK TWICE

Directed by: Lee Isaac Chung

Starring: Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos

Some films are so cinema-ready that watching them on anything less feels insane. Twisters is one such movie, pumping up Lee Isaac Chung’s tornado-wrangling disasterpiece to a truly epic scale. Where The Crawdads Sing’s Daisy Edgar-Jones plays scientist and storm-chaser Kate Carter, whose invention might just halt the city-slurping force of nature spinning across the Midwest. But to get close enough to pull the trigger, she’ll have to work with Glen Powell’s cocksure social-media bragger Tyler Owens – not to mention survive the thousand flying objects smashing through her windshield. Shot on location with practical effects that left the cast bruised for real, Twisters was born for the big screen and promises to blow the roof off.

Jan (Age 12) - ★★★1/2

"Mid film. I think this film has a very basic storyline. I think the idea of tornadoes being the main theme is cool though. I liked how the antagonist became the protagonist and visa versa, this made me think that the first impression a person makes in a film doesn't have to be similar the last impression they make. Which is nice...

Overall, an okay film but I'd recommend other films rather than this."

COMING SOON!!!....

25th October...

VENOM: THE LAST DANCE

Directed by: Kelly Marcel

Starring: Tom Hardy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple

Eddie Brock still can’t shake his inner slathering symbiote, and while details for Venom 3 are sketchy – beyond the return of Tom Hardy in the lead role and Kelly Marcel’s step up to the director gig – it’s a safe bet there’ll be schizophrenic banter, bitten-off heads and a new big bad tipped to top Carnage. Plus, there's also rumours of the web-slinger himself making an appearance this time around.
